What Is Progress
The definition of progress is working towards a desired goal or objective and taking actions to achieve them. We achieve success as a result of working towards the goal or objective and gain ongoing growth.
When we gradually progress, it means we are step-by-step moving towards development and working towards the goal or objective.
Improvement is the direction, working towards a goal or objective and by monitoring, reviewing, and tracking development we determine if we are moving in the right direction.
Why Progress Is Important
The importance of progress cannot be overstated. Here are some key reasons why progress is essential:
1. Achievement
Without moving forward, we are stagnating. In the process of development, we understand the decisions we are making and can learn from them.
2. Motivation
Progress serves as a source of motivation, no matter how small, it can inspire us to continue working and maintaining momentum.
3. Learning & Development
Progress provides opportunities for learning and development. We gain valuable experiences, develop new skills, and expand our knowledge.
Overall, progress is essential for personal and professional development, as well as for the advancement of organisations and communities.
Work in Progress versus Work in Process
Work in progress indicates that we are working on something, a project, an ongoing or developing project. It is continuing to move forward, and a common phrase used in organisations.
A goal is a desired state / outcome that is generally broad and is long term. An objective is short term and defines measurable actions to achieve an overall goal, for instance, how to set ASMART objective setting at the start of the Performance Management Cycle.
In progress, could indicate when applying for a job, that the recruitment process is continuing, and the application is currently being reviewed and assessed by the Talent Acquisition Specialist.
Work in process refers to something, a task, that has already started, but it is in process, and therefore not yet finalised, but will be completed shortly. For example, HR process management is crucial as it ensures tasks are consistently executed according to standards.
Progress in the Workplace
In the workplace, progress is crucial for individual and organisational success. It involves advancing in the employee’s career path, acquiring new skills, and taking on greater responsibilities.
Employees can continuously learn, setting goals, seeking feedback, building relationships, and taking initiative. It boosts motivation, employee engagement, and job satisfaction, while also driving performance improvement, innovation, and talent retention.
By fostering a culture of progress, organisations can empower their employees to thrive, contribute to their fullest potential, and achieve their professional goals.
